11:54 am - music
http://www.box.net/shared/4d7pqvq9x4

I'm going to add crowd sounds to the end of this. fading in as the guitar fades out.

I know, I know, sounds like everything else i've ever made.

This was too long to tweet:

"For a man whose' speculations are for the most part anchored shrewdly in the quiddity of real life, this claim seems to float balloon-like above the evidence of contemporary history."

It was directed at Michael Waltzer.

11:57 pm - rainbow warrior and angolagate.
Between http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinking_of_the_Rainbow_Warrior and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angolagate I'ms starting to think that French have no morals.

I mean, seriously, they can't even beat Greenpeace while testing nuclear weapons?

Additionally, "Les Herbes Folles" and "Swimming Pool" were attempts at murder(ing) cinéma as a whole.

I like that twitter's taken all the single sentence entries from my livejournal. it will make it easier to look back in time and talk to myself.

having said that, don't expect longer entries (that this one can be an example of) with any increasing frequency.

11:26 pm - feasts
I've abandoned the blogspot blog, obviously. However, since the central ideas was that i'd base my updates in a bit of a parallel with my experiences retracing or doubling Hemingway's "a movable feast," it seems pertinent to note, somewhere, that i finished the book.

The end came unexpectedly, somewhere between a porto, a tiramisu, and leaving.
it was Laura's treat, for which I am appreciative. (She had a mad craving for hot chocolate)
Unfortunately, as recompense, I cooked dinner, but too late, and now that it is done, would be unhealthy to eat.
We'll have chicken soup for breakfast. It might even hold 'till lunch.

One of my molars is mainly fake. It's true. and a corner of the fake part chipped off.
The night after it happened (last night) I dreamed that more of my teeth were chipping and falling off.

The next few weeks are going to get nasty at school. I have a lot of presentations to do. I don't enjoy presenting.

I'm planning on applying to grad schools starting this weekend. I will have to rush them, but maybe I can still get them in.

I hope i can still get them in.

I've also been trying to find composition competitions around Paris, but it's very hard to find. Where do you even look? It's not like composers usually congregate in particular places, particularly outside of the conservatory. I don't know if i'd even be allowed into the conservatory. It could be fun to snoop around until i get kicked out though, if it weren't so far.

In other words, things are much the same, but with different ingredients. We saw "absinthe" as an aperitif in one of the caffees we visited recently. The bread is also better. However, the winter's supposed to get awful chilly.

09:00 pm - Secrets revealed
I am Alejandro. I want to take my girlfriend out dancing en boite but I am such a lazy poopy sometimes. I like eating Nutella by the gallons. I have very large teeth I use against my girlfriend at times. Eating is my favorite passtime along with sleeping. I am many times smelly.

But I am as cute as a button.

Having said that, my memories of new college are very warm. When I think New College, my mind immediately goes to the sun-bleached sunday morning ventures into sarasota's main street in sunglasses and flip-flops. I do find it funny that what I remember most vividly are the morning afters, the struggles with hang over and the bright and lucid reality found after a night full of respite and embarrassment.
But I still don't know what lessons to draw from these experiences.
Paris is cold, gray and dark. But i don't feel out of place anymore, just that i haven't understood what i've already found here.

04:10 am - HOLY (music) SHIT
This is, no joke, the upcoming events for Paris' "city of music" district theater:

Ensemble Intercontemporain performing:
* Wednesday, September 30, 2009 / 8:00 PM
* Salle des concerts

Edgar Varèse Intégrales
Pierre Jodlowski Barbarismes / Trilogie de l'an mil
Entracte
Luciano Berio Laborinthus II

€18!

AND THEN

* Sunday, October 11, 2009 / 4:30 PM
* Amphithéâtre

Igor Stravinski Concertino, pour quatuor à cordes
Double Canon, pour quatuor à cordes
Iannis Xenakis Ikhoor, pour trio à cordes
Igor Stravinski Elégie, pour alto
Iannis Xenakis Tetras, pour quatuor à cordes
Igor Stravinski Trois Pièces, pour quatuor à cordes
Iannis Xenakis Mikka, pour violon

€30!

HOLY SHIT!

The rest of their upcoming events are essentially just like this! Stravinsky and Xenakis all fall long!

--------------- update.

Ok, so I kept reading and it turns out they're having a festival for the next few months called "Stravinsky/Xenakis: Citizens of the world." So all of their events and specials guests (all of them) are playing Stravinsky pieces and Xenakis pieces intermixed with each other.

So yeah. As I said.

HOLY SHIT.

I need to buy season tickets. that would be like giving a little kid in a candy store a credit card.

-------------- update 2.

No, never mind, it's just all of their guests through september and october. Then, they're switching to Miles Davis. Boy, I knew french people still liked Jazz, but i didn't know how much.

08:04 pm - oh shit.
This is how poor I am.

I took out a $7500 loan. I only got $7000 after taxes and service fees.

I made $4000 over the summer, working instead of traveling.

I'm being charged €5450 for a year of schooling.

Charged €700 for september as far as housing is concerned and €500 as a "key deposit"

Which means that after I pay for schooling, undoubtedly tomorrow, I will have only around $1,500 to my name.

WHAT?

Again, what the fuck am i doing here? Looking for a job, I guess.

It doesn't help that my loan ended up being for $7000 and tuition translates to $9000.

shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit.

In other news: I learnt that the average number of languages spoken by a "sciences-po" student is 4.
neat.

oh! and yeah. I don't know whether I will be able to apply for housing help, since the landlord isn't doing this proper and we therefore have neither contract nor receipt (either of which is necessary to apply for funds). I doubt the really check on whether the place is legit though, so i'm gonna go ahead and ask him (after laura gets here so as not to pile on the demands) whether he would terribly mind fabricating something we can use.

Shit, if we get €300 from the government, I guess i'd be fine if he charges us €100 more. They'd probably only give us about €100 though. whatevs.

A usual, once the cusp of free education was within reach, an administrator steps in to sort out the issues inherent to my account. I hope it gets sorted out in my favor.

The french drink a thing called "panache" which is a mixture of beer (1664) and lemonade.
They often improve on it by adding grenadine and calling it a Monaco.

so here's the monaco:

1/2 lager
1/2 lemonade
splash of grenadine.

also a thing called "diabolo"

syrup (mint, lemon, grenadine or anything else) with lemonade.

Alliumphobia = Fear of garlic.

Vampires are alliumphobic. Romanians are not (unless they are also vampire).
:. the state of being a vampire supersedes over the state of being a romanian.
:. vampiridom transcends nationalism.
:. vampires are the first true cosmopolitans.

I miss florida.

Went to bed at 1, which means i fell asleep at 2, so i woke up at 10, and haven't done anything all day but wish i'd gotten up earlier.

It's too late to go to the visas again and no one has responded about the fees.
I'm discouraged, demoralized and hungry.
Wouldn't know where to start looking for the person responsible.
Wouldn't know where to look for the orientation program. I'm afraid to admit that now that i have to force myself into it, I'm also running into the hurdle of my social inadequacies. I wish Laura were here instead.

It's like i hit the ground running, tripped over a hurdle, and now i'm giving up with the excuse of "i need to recharge my batteries." No phone, no orientation, no social framework.

I tried to reason it through Hemingway, and value my experience by the distance it created from my life elsewhere, but so long as that's the nature of its value, it is essentially limited and bound by the previous experience. So, I need to start living here, rather than in florida, but that takes time and eradication. it also requires that i remember why (if i ever had a reason) i want to be here.

I think I'll go to the Orsay today.

Air sirens have been going off outside, like war just returned to europe. They're probably just testing out the system and all of the locals are used to it. It makes me feel very young in a very old city.

Or like an immigrant would.

The tap water tastes like i shouldn't have tried it.
And i discovered a bakery selling baguettes for €0.85 behind my house. (there's another one in front selling them for €0.90 but come on. i'm not rich, you know?)
I also discovered, near the bakery out back, a little coffee place that although without great views or prices, does offer free wifi. Coffee at the counter is €1. At the table it's €2. That's batter than across the street with their horrible €2.11 price tag that includes both taxes and a service charge.
We have a nice view of the Montparnasse tour from the intersection. I guess it's starting to grow on me. despite being a colombia reminiscent 70s legacy monolith considered the second ugliest building in the world, and all...
I have the windows open, too. It makes me feel like i'm outside even though i'm actually here making dinner.
